Another guest set on WNYU's Plastic Tales From The Marshmallow Dimension for that ass. Dodgy in spots, but great tunes all around.

Mars...My Stars!

A triumphant return to Plastic Tales From The Marshmallow Dimention yesterday. Despite a few technical difficulties the set went well. A lot of staples, but a few new pick-ups as well.

Final Conflict - Ashes to Ashes

Special thanks to Paul for hooking me up with this California-based punk record. Allmusic thinks this group is from the UK and the LP I've got was pressed in France, but their myspace reps Long Beach. Go figure. More punk to come in a few days.

Von Lmo - Future Language

Almost passed on this record. Happy as hell I didn't. Punk from the late 70's early 80's New York scene. Often lumped in with No Wave from that period. This is pop rock.

Proggin' All Over The World

I nice selection of Prog and Hard Rock tracks from around the world. Making stops in Germany, Japan, Argentina, Former-Yugoslavia, Italy, England, and Australia, this collection of songs features progs heavy hitters alongside a few lesser knowns. Highlights include the relentless "Pollo Frito" from Argentina's Crucis. The track's urgency only faulters for a middle section of seering Full House-interlude guitar licks. Also on the spastically driving tip is Le Orme from Italy who seem to include one track like "Ritorno Al Nulla" on each of their albums. Then we've got the Rock in Opposition founders Henry Cow whose sound is equal parts rock and contemporary classical.

Mixed Bag

Here is a bundle of tracks that I'd recorded for updates in the past, but never got around to posting. Two Radiohead sound-a-likes (Catherine Lara / J.K. & Co.), two from Brazil (Gal Costa / Secos & Molhados), and an odd track from Teddy Fire for good measure.

Byron Black & Living Objects: The Unexpected

This 1981 release from the obscure Broken Records label (New Jersey) has elements of psych, punk, prog, and glam. I've not been able to turn up much information about Black and company, but did find one other release from 1983 on dual 45s (priced at an unfriendly $400). Cluttered, dark, brimming with Lou Reed/James Chance vocal steez, and at times resembling Gong in their heavy moments; it is so choice, if you have the means I highly recommend picking one up.

Valentine's Day

A nice collection of songs for the Hallmark holiday. Got some sex jams to start things off followed by a bunch of break up songs. Heavy on soul, but tracks veer into psychedelic territory here and there, and I've even included a hard rock cut from my favorite Anarchists, the Edgar Broughton Band. Truthfully, I don't know if the Eduardo Arujo & Silvinha, 'Opanige', has anything to do with love. It's just here because it's sexy.

1. Cleveland Wrecking Co. - Superfine From Behind Lady
2. World's Funkiest Band - I Feel Your Love
3. Eduardo Arujo & Silvinha - Opanige
4. Serge Gainsbourg & Jane Birkin - Jane B
5. Annette Peacock - I'm The One
6. New Birth - Forever
7. Toppiks - Give It A Chance To Grow
8. Laura Lee - That's How It Is
9. Linda Perry - It's All In The Back Of Me Now
10. World's Funkiest Band - When You're Alone
11. Inez Foxx - Let Me Down Easy
12. Linda Jones - What Have I Done (To Make You Mad)
13. Nina Simone - Either Way I Lose
14. Gal Costa - Lost In The Paradise
15. Rotary Connection - Hangin' Round The Bee Tree
16. Edgar Broughton Band - Why Can't Somebody Love Me
17. White Noise - My Game Of Loving
18. Tarheel Slim & Little Ann - It's Too Late

Alen Robin: Super Shrink

From the same label (Janus) that released albums from Cymande, Demon Fuzz, and Minnie Ripperton comes this strange spoken word collage record with funky interludes. Pay very little for this and it may be worth price of admission.

Enjoy

Ultra Mega Active Christ

Spend enough time looking for records in the south and you end up with a crate or two of shitty Christian records. This compilation is dedicated to those that transcend beehive-matching-suit-turdliness. There is some filler for sure, and some things too snoozy for most, but I have to admit I'm a fan of every track on here. Ah, guilty pleasures. This is the last comp for a while as I shift focus toward mixes. Check back for weekly downloads and prepare for a very special Valentine's mix.

Flying Saucer Take Me Away

Fuck a Pink Ranger. Before the Voltron ripoffs, there was Grandizer. A feat of Anterean technology piloted by interstellar-casanova Orion Quest. Japanese-super-robots aside; I ganked the name for my second show on WNYU in the fall of 2005. Intended to showcase sample-based music alongside its sources, the program started out as a cluster fuck of underground Hip Hop and Jazz Funk. Over time the sets became more eclectic, and the sound veered left of center. Tropicalia alongside No Wave, Free Jazz next to classic Soul. There were occasional themed sets to lend some semblance of focus. I've provided a link to the WNYU archives for your listening pleasure. See if you can spot the shows where I was drunk.
